What is Safe Medford Sings Out!?

We are a loosely organized group that meets once or twice a month, in person, to learn simple songs of resistance and resilience.  FAQs:

Q: What is the purpose of this group?

A: Singing together in solidarity is an act of joyful resistance.  It just plain feels good. The songs need not be complex or wordy, in fact, the simpler the better.  Besides having fun, and raising our spirits, as song leaders/singers, we can be of service to groups organizing standouts in and around Medford. And perhaps organize an action of our own, at some point.

Q: Where /when do you meet?

A: We alternate between the Medford Public Library and Arts Collaborative Medford, on an irregular schedule. Find the upcoming dates on the SM Calendar and join the Sm mailing list to get reminders!!

Q:  I’m interested but can’t commit to regular meetings.

A:  It’s fine to come when you can. There is no attendance requirement.

Q:  I’m unsure about participating.  Is it OK to come and just listen?

A:  Most definitely YES.

Q: Do I need to read music to participate?

A: No, we’ll be learning by ear.

Q:  Someone once told me I can’t sing.

A:  Forget about that.  These songs are very simple and do not require any special vocal abilities.  All voices welcome.

Q:  I am so inspired by the singing coming out of Minneapolis.  Will we be singing from the Singing Resistance Songbook?

A:  Yes, we will learn some of the songs that we are hearing from Minneapolis.  Also many others, sticking to ones that are simple and/or familiar.

Q:  Can I invite a friend who does not belong to Safe Medford?

A:  Yes, please do bring a friend (or two).  All are welcome.

Q:  Is it OK to bring kids?

A:  Yes!  Bring grandpa too.

Q:  Who is leading the singing?

A:  Ellen is a Medford resident and member of the Safe Medford Organizing Committee who loves making music with people of all ages.  A lifelong singer with a wide repertoire, she has decades of performing and song leading experience in a variety of settings. You can learn more about her at Overall Music.
